Overview of Department of Political Theory
Pursuant to the Decision No. 494/QT-TTg  dated June 24, 2002 of the Prime Minister and the Official Dispatch No.7821/CTCT of the Minister of Education and Training, guiding the implementation of a number of articles of Decision No. 494/QD -TTg dated June 24, 2002 of the Prime Minister in the academic year 2002-2003,  agreed by the Party Committee and Board of Administratorss, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology issued Decision No. 171 / QD-TT dated December 12, 2002 to establish Department of  Marxism – Leninism – Ho Chi Minh Ideology directly under the administration of the President; Pursuant to the Official Dispatch No. 2488/BGDDT- ĐH & SĐH dated March 25, 2008 of the Minister of Education and Training on teaching plan of Political Ideology subjects, the President of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology issued Decision No. 135 / QD-TC dated June 11, 2008 officially renaming Department of Marxism – Leninism – Ho Chi Minh ideology into Department of Political Ideology.

1. Organizational structure
Department of Political Ideology has 3 specialized programs, along with a group of guest lecturers with high academic degrees and academic titles from reputable universities in Ho Chi Minh City.

2. Functions and duties 
- Department of Political Ideology provides required course in the Training Programs assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training:
+ Basic principles of Marxism - Leninism
+ Ho Chi Minh Ideology
+ Revolutionary policies of the Communist Party of Vietnam
+ Philosophy at postgraduate level
- The Department often carries out researches to review teaching methods, organizing professional activities, seminars and researches in the major.
- The Department also takes the initiative role in coordinating with the Office of Political Affairs – Human Resources – Students Affairs to establish study plans, organize the Olympic contest of subjects in Marxism, Ho Chi Minh Ideology and other socio-political activities.
